Mercedes Schlapp, the White House communication strategist, has a tough task. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job in her role as the White House's strategic communications advisor. She is dealing with an administration which includes the president as the president's own communications director. Schlapp remains focused all the time, working closely with White House policy and political teams, along with the shop owners and the legislative affairs department. As of now she's focused on various issues including school safety and opioids. As a current employee she isn't communicating with reporters. In March, she garnered lots of attention from the media after her name came up as a possible contender for the position of succeeding Hope Hicks in the role as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a simple job of White House strategic communication adviser. Mercedes Schlapp must deal with an administration that is plagued by various issues, including a president acting as its own communication director and Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversies. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focussed on the task in hand and has worked closely with the White House's political as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as well with the larger communications team in order to oversee policy implementations. She has focused on topics such as school safety, opioids and infrastructure, along with trade. At the moment the director does not interact too much with journalists. She did draw a flurry of attention in March when her name was floated as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. It was a tense battle. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as another candidate for the position, also named Tony, started jousting with each other on the news. Schlapp stated that after she was informed that when the Washington Examiner ran a story with negative remarks about Sayegh she sat down for a chat with Sayegh.
